Statement from the Racing Reform Group NSW on the departure of Peter V’landys from Racing NSW

The resignation of Peter V’landys as CEO of Racing NSW should be the catalyst for the Premier to immediately release the report into the governance of Thoroughbred racing that was conducted by Brad Hazzard.

Mr Hazzard looked at the governance and functions of Racing NSW as a central part of his review and the industry must understand his recommendations and findings, as it is likely he has called for significant reforms of the organisation and its structure to improve transparency and accountability.

After more than 22 years under the leadership of one chief executive, it is time for the organisation to be reformed and its board refreshed.

The process for finding the next permanent CEO of Racing NSW should not begin until there is clarity around what the responsibilities for that role will be. Any attempt to quickly appoint a successor would be yet another governance failure from the board of Racing NSW.

It is vital there is a proper and consultative process to set the direction of Racing NSW to safeguard the sustainability of racing in the state and the RRG looks forward to being part of that discussion.
